As you may know, for the last several years, independent booksellers have banned together to sell gift cards redeemable nationwide, create bestsellers lists and recommend new books on a monthly basis under the umbrella BookSense. In July of 2008, we decided to shake things up a bit. There are still gift cards and lists of books (see Indie Next), but under the umbrella of IndieBound, we ask that you embrace all of your local independents. Without us, America would be rather homogenized. So are you ready to do your part to keep America interesting?
Remember when you support a local independent you are:
Fostering uniqueness:
You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. So why would you want your
community to look that way?
More diversity in your
community only enhances its appeal.
Supporting your local economy: For every $100 you spend at one of our local businesses, $68 will stay in the community.
What happens when you spend that same $100 at a national
chain? $57 goes to corporate headquarters instead.
Reducing enviromental impact: Buying from a local business conserves energy and
resources in the form of less fuel for
transportation,
less packaging, and products that you know are safe
and well made, because your local retailers stand
behind them.
